DEPARTMENT/LOCATION: Grades 11 & 12 / OATC (Olathe Advanced Technical Center)
STATUS: Certified – Contract (Exempt) 187-day calendar + 10 days extended
POSITION SUMMARY: This position is responsible for teaching junior and senior high school students the skills required in the animal science industry specific to veterinary nursing.
PRIMARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Facilitates learning activities so that students learn the principles, theory, skills, and work ethic necessary to become proficient for entry level positions.
- Develop and execute lesson plans that lead toward student mastery of program competencies in the Animal Science CTE Pathway.
- Develop and update curriculum as needed.
- Prepare orders for the purchase of supplies, instruments, equipment and instructional materials necessary to support the learning activities of the program.
- Maintain inventory and repair records and ensure the safe and proper operation and maintenance of instruments and equipment.
- Maintain an Advisory Committee and keep records of meeting notices, meeting agendas and meeting minutes.
- Create a positive learning environment.
- Monitor, assess and advise learners on technical and academic progress and performance.
- Remain informed of new trends, methods, materials, instruments and equipment in the animal health science industry.
- Actively participate in all professional development activities as required by the school district.
- Integrate Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) leadership activities into the program.
- Use current academic and industry practices in assigned courses of instruction.
- Develop and upgrades lesson material, training aids and maintains equipment within assigned course of instruction.
- Assist in the recruitment and placement of learners.
- Attend technical update classes annually to maintain certifications as needed
- Analyze and interpret test data
- Work with district CTE Coordinator to accurately report state and federal reporting requirements
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- 1-3 years teaching experience preferred but not required
- Kansas teaching licensure in Agriculture/Vocational Agriculture or Biology; more advanced degrees (Bachelor’s, Master’s, and/or Doctorate Degree) in Animal Sciences preferred OR meet requirements for CTE Specialized Certificate listed below:
- Experience using Microsoft office products, including Excel.
CTE Specialized Certificate Requirements:
- Verification of occupational competency:
- Industry recognized certificate in the technical profession and five years of full-time work experience in that technical profession OR
- If hired in a .5FTE or less assignment, verification of ONE of the following, dependent upon the technical content area:
- Recognized trade competency exam (for example, NOCTI carpentry exam for residential carpentry)
- Occupational license (nursing license for health sciences; law license for law and public safety)
- Appropriate degree (business degree business management)
- Industry recognized credential (applicable especially for information technology pathway)
- 2 years (4000 hours) of occupational work experience related to the CTE area (experience as a chef for culinary arts)
- Request for issuance from a school district that authorizes the applicant to teach identified courses
CTE Specialized Certificate:
- Allows individuals with appropriate occupational knowledge and skills to teach in a CTE pathway assignment
- Valid only in the Kansas school district requesting the issuance of the certificate and identified on the certificate
- Valid only to teach in the CTE courses authorized by the hiring district and identified on the certificate
- Valid for three school years
- Valid for grades 8-12
- Renewable with a request for issuance by a hiring district and application for renewal
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Excellent verbal, written and listening communication skills
- Ability to work well with others in an academic environment Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, etc.)
