Description
Saint Joseph's Center, a provider of compassionate care and support for individuals with intellectual disabilities, is looking for a knowledgeable and proactive Assistant Director of Buildings and Grounds to support the efficient, safe, and effective operation of our physical plant. This position plays a key leadership role in supervising maintenance, security, and grounds staff, coordinating with external contractors, and assisting with the planning and execution of construction and renovation projects.
The Assistant Director acts as the primary point of contact in the absence of the Director and works to ensure our facilities meet operational, safety and regulatory standards at all times.
The Assistant Director of Buildings and Grounds is a management level position based at Saint Joseph's Center's administrative headquarters in Scranton, PA. This is a salaried position with healthcare benefits, paid time off, retirement plan, and other additional benefits.

- Assume responsibility for physical plan operations during the Director's absence.
- Oversee daily maintenance operations including scheduling, task completion, and follow up.
- Perform hands-on maintenance tasks when needed to support team operations.
- Supervise staff involved in maintenance, security, groundskeeping and plant operations.
- Maintain accurate records such as blueprints, maintenance logs, equipment inventories, and vendor documentation.
- Serve in a rotating on-call schedule to address after-hours maintenance needs.
- Act as the liaison for contractors and vendors during building projects, ensuring work aligns with contract specifications and timelines.
- Conduct regular inspections of equipment, property, and systems to ensure compliance with safety codes, regulations, and performance standards.
- Monitor service and maintenance reports for the facility's vehicle fleet.
- Perform safety inspections, including fire extinguishers and alarm systems; coordinate testing of the building's security systems.
- Evaluate current maintenance and safety procedures, recommending improvements to increase efficiency and safety.
- Provide training for new maintenance staff in proper use of tools, safety protocols, and equipment operation.
- Maintain adequate inventory of tools, supplies, and equipment necessary for operations.
- Conduct performance evaluations and provide feedback for maintenance staff.
- Participate in planning meetings, facility walkthroughs, and organization activities.
- Demonstrate flexibility in adapting to changing priorities and work environments.
- High school diploma or GED required; additional technical or vocational training in facilities management or a related field preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years experience in building maintenance, groundskeeping, and/or facilities operations.
- Experience supervising staff and managing facility-related projects.
- Familiarity with reading and interpreting blueprints and technical documents.
- Understanding of building codes, ordinances, and safety regulations.
- Ability to efficiently communicate with staff, contractors, and leadership both verbally and in writing.
- Proven problem-solving skills and the ability to make sound decisions independently.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
- Valid Pennsylvania Driver's License required.
