Work Environment, Physical Demands and Child Safety:

This position may include a combination of in-office and remote work, based on operational needs. Workspace may be shared with other staff when on-site. All YMCA Staff are mandated by law to report child abuse and neglect to Child Protective Services. Such reports can be made verbally at 1-855-444-3911. Staff will also report suspected abuse or neglect to their supervisor, senior management, or Human Resources.


Under the direction of the School Age Education Director and in accordance with Association policies, the Group Leader will be responsible to assist in the operation of all School Age Education programming. The Group Leader serves as an instructor and role model to program participants, participates in the planning and implementation of high-quality programs by taking responsibility for each child’s safety and well-being, engaging families and school staff, while complying with licensing rules and procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Make meaningful connections with program participants, families, and school personnel while exhibiting a positive and caring attitude
  • Exemplify the four core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility in all aspects of YMCA work
  • Supervise and engage children while implementing enriching and educational activities in a fun and safe environment
  • Arrive on time to site and well-prepared to maintain appropriate adult to child ratios
  • Recognize and solve individual and group conflicts effectively
  • Keep accurate daily attendance records and cross- offs
  • Maintain a professional, clean, neat, organized and safe School Age atmosphere
  • Attend staff trainings and meetings, including required workshops
  • Understand and follow all state licensing and Youngstar requirements as listed in DCF Rule Book 251 along with YMCA and School policies and procedures
  • Maintain current certifications, staff file and continuing education requirements per state licensing and YMCA policies
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by School Age Education Director or Leadership Staff

  • Preferred candidate will have completed Introduction to the Child Care Profession and Skills and Strategies or course work in the field of Education or similar field or willing to complete course work provided in a timely manner to become qualified to be an assistant teacher.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Required Trainings: Provided by the YMCA
    • CPR-Pro, AED, and First Aid Certification is required (if not present, must be obtained within 3 months).
    • Abusive Head Trauma (Formerly Shaken Baby Syndrome) is required (must be obtained prior to working in the classroom).
  • Must complete fingerprinting requirement prior to working first shift with children
  • Previous experience working with children is preferred
  • Must be dependable, responsible, and have a reliable form of transportation
  • Must be available through duration of school year and be available for School Out Days(holiday/in service)
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Must exhibit joy and satisfaction, and have a passion for working with children
  • Consistently demonstrate a set of strong professional skills including interpersonal communication, time management, punctuality, initiative, and flexibility
  • The incumbent will exhibit the core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility in all aspects of their work within the YMCA
  • Must have understanding, patience, creativity, cooperative spirit, common sense, spiritual depth and commitment to working with youth and their families
