MEDICAL ASSISTANT

Under the supervision of a Physician, Nurse Practitioner or Registered Nurse, the Medical Assistant (MA) may perform certain direct patient care services and support procedures within the clinic area at PACE Southeast Michigan. The MA will act only within the scope of his/her authority to practice.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS:

  • The MA may perform a variety of functions under the supervision of a Physician, Nurse Practitioner or Registered Nurse.
  • Escorting participants into the exam room and preparing them for examination by the provider; if necessary, the MA may assist the participant in undressing and preparing for the examination.
  • May be required to escort participants to laboratory, radiology department or appointments.
  • Taking vital signs (temperature, blood pressure, pulse, and respiration), height and weights and recording them in the medical record.
  • The MA may collect urine, stool or sputum specimens as directed.
  • The MA assists with maintaining the glucometer log by testing and recording the results of the control solutions for high and low range daily, or when a new container of test strips is opened.
  • The MA may perform blood sugar testing through a finger stick.
  • The MA assists in answering the clinic telephone, takes messages and directs calls.
  • The MA prepares laboratory specimen tags and encounter sheets, and schedules specialty appointments.
  • The MA works with the transportation coordinator to arrange for transport for the participant to and from their appointment.
  • The MA may give pre-printed instructions to the participant or family member regarding tests or procedures and may verbally instruct the participant or family member regarding the printed instructions.
  • The MA tracks and records lab and radiology results for completion.
  • The MA provides a monthly record to the financial manager of all completed appointments, lab tests, or x-rays.
  • The MA observes and reports information concerning the participant to the physician, nurse practitioner or nurse.
  • The MA assists with cleaning and restocking the clinic/treatment area as required; the MA cleans the examination room after each use and prepares the room for the next patient; the MA assists with maintaining a neat and safe patient and clinic environment.
  • The MA may assist the physician, NP, or nurse in sterile or non-sterile procedures; may apply non-sterile dressings under the direction of the RN or provider.
  • The MA assists with all specialty areas within the clinic, such as podiatry, dentistry and mental health services.
  • The MA assists participants with self-administration of respiratory treatments within the clinic.
  • The MA assists with effective communication of participant needs and requests by appropriately prioritizing problems and triaging needs to nursing and medical staff.
  • The MA communicates effectively and courteously with participants, families, other nursing staff, the physician and the nurse practitioner.
  • The MA may identify issues and problems related to participants, staff, and self and communicate to the responsible RN or manager if problems arise, e.g. complaints, concerns.
  • The MA signs and dates all documentation in accordance with CSI policies and procedures.
  • The MA performs other duties as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • The MA must participate in annual, mandatory in-service training and screening, including but not limited to: infection control, TB testing, safety training, and BLS training.
  • The MA must have the ability to establish and maintain interpersonal and interdepartmental relationships.
  • The MA demonstrates knowledge of and has had successful completion of a Medical Assistant Course.
  • Must be certified in the state of Michigan.
  • Successful completion of competency testing within job parameters.
  • The MA should have experience or related position in a health care facility, preferably in geriatrics.
  • Must have (one) 1 year of experience with a frail or elderly population.
  • Must meet a standardized set of competencies (approval by CMS) before working independently.
  • Must be medically cleared for communicable diseases and have all immunizations up-to-date before engaging in direct participant contact.


WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Manual dexterity is required to complete tasks; walking, stooping, standing, reaching, bending and lifting of forty (40) pounds or more may be needed in the performance of duties.
  • Working conditions are variable with exposure to communicable diseases, due to patient environment.
