Arbor Acres, the premier retirement community in Winston-Salem, is seeking a Chief Health and Wellness Officer due to the planned retirement of a senior staff member.

The Chief Health and Wellness Officer (CHWO) serves as Vice-President of Health Services, as a member of the Executive Team, and works closely with the President/CEO and the Vice-President/CFO to ensure that Arbor Acres at all times fulfills its mission at the highest level possible for those it serves. The CHWO holds direct responsibility for and provides leadership to all medical services, nursing care, therapy, home care, pharmacy, and continuing care programs/services available to residents. The CHWO provides oversight to and is accountable for compliance with all health and wellness related services and is responsible for supporting, coaching and holding direct reports responsible for achieving overall service excellence and the highest possible quality of life in all areas of the community.

This individual is key to our organization’s development and strategic growth, ensuring that not only are the legal requirements of a healthcare facility met, but the residents are fully supported and cared for in the unique manner to which Arbor Acres’ residents are accustomed. This individual ensures both external and internal factors are considered for current and future plans and makes sure that the organization is looking ahead to consider unique technology, training programs and other elements required to be an exceptional community.

Responsibilities

The CHWO’s primary job is ensure the development and consistent implementation of processes and strategies to ensure that all residents in the community have access to, and benefit from, a seamless continuation of care regardless of where those services originate. As a result, the position requires the development of relationships with key health and wellness partners in local health and wellness institutions. Additionally, the CHWO is responsible for developing a proactive vision of how technology, clinical practice, programmatic adjustments and research can improve the lives of those we serve. Some of the key responsibilities are listed here:

  • Plans and implements a comprehensive integrated program of health services for residents in all areas with the goal of seamless and proactive service, fully compliant with all applicable laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Assures effectiveness of Arbor Acres campus-wide continuum of care and develops and implements policies and procedures that assure responsible, compassionate and effective transition of residents through the service continuum.
  • Participates in the preparation of the annual operational and capital budget and provides oversight of expenditures in order to control expenses and to meet or exceed budgeted goals.
  • Establishes relationships with key health and wellness partners such as Wake Forest Baptist, Novant, Senior Services, Wake Forest University, Winston Salem State University and other schools of higher education.
  • Selects, oversees contractual arrangements with, and supervises service delivery by all health service consultants including the Medical Director.
  • Provides oversight to the resident clinic to assure excellence in delivery of medical services to those who use the physician program, and of nursing and other health support services to all independent living residents, in partnership with our third party physician’s practice.
  • Develops and monitors key quality and financial indicators for all health and wellness services and uses that data to make improvements in efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery.
  • Works to extend person-centered care to all licensed areas of the community.
  • Works with IT to identify opportunities to ensure that Arbor Acres is maximizing the use of its current programs, but also developing a vision of how care and service delivery will be facilitated by technological advances.
  • Provides oversight to resident use of private duty care providers and assures compliance of all such arrangements with Arbor Acres applicable policies and procedures.
  • Cultivates partnerships with local educational and health research institutions and oversees health care internship programs and geriatric or gerontological research projects.
  • Ensures that training and staffing requirements are met in ways that ensure excellence in service delivery as well as retention of staff.
  • Attends meetings of the Leadership Team, the Executive Team, The Board’s Executive Committee, and the Board of Directors. Serves as liaison to other Board Committees as requested by the President and/or the Chair. The CHWO also serve as President of Arbor Acres at Home LLC and works closely with CEO and CFO to insure financial viability and coordination on governance issues.
  • Serves as primary contact/coordinator for third party accreditation.

  • Candidate must have in-depth knowledge of licensure rules and regulation, knowledge of the standards of practice in delivery of nursing and other health services, knowledge of best practices in the long-term care industry, and strong knowledge of management practices.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, the ability to articulate vision and to lead others in its accomplishment
  • Strong public speaking skills (bothlarge and small audiences) in a manner that is relaxed, informative, and reflects positively on Arbor Acres.
  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, preferably in a business or health related field.
  • A minimum of 5-7 years in a position of a similar level of decision-making and scope as a leader in the continuing care industry.
  • This individual should be licensed to practice Nursing Home Administration in the State of North Carolina or the ability to become licensed.
