Position Summary

Performs and reports test results for all Quality Control Laboratory and Reference Laboratory procedures in an accurate and timely manner in compliance with Federal and State Regulations, AABB Standards, Manufacturer’s recommendations, and internal operating procedures. Demonstrates proficiency, competency and understanding of fundamental principles of Quality Control Laboratory and Reference Laboratory procedures with a minimal amount of supervision.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Reference Lab Duties

  • Resolves complex serologic problems and provides technical advice to hospital transfusion service personnel with minimal supervision.
  • Performs compatibility testing.
  • Performs molecular testing.
  • Performs platelet antibody screens and crossmatch studies.
  • Selects and/or tests RBC and platelet products appropriate for the patient.
  • Performs Fetal Bleed Quantitation using a modified Kleihauer-Betke technique.
  • Performs donor sample testing.
  • Performs preventive maintenance, calibration and quality control on equipment in the Reference Lab.
  • Performs other duties as needed to support the operation.

Quality Control Lab Duties

  • Performs preventive maintenance and quality control on microbiology equipment and hematology analyzers in the Quality Control Laboratory.
  • Performs sample testing on the hematology analyzers.
  • Performs bacterial detection testing on platelet components using the microbiology equipment.
  • Assists in troubleshooting the hematology analyzers and microbiology equipment.
  • Performs entry of donor test results.
  • Performs other duties as needed to support the operation.

COMPLEXITY

Work includes various duties involving different processes and methods that may require substantial depth of analysis. There are major areas of uncertainty in approach, methodology, or interpretation and evaluation processes caused by continuing changes, technological developments, conflicting requirements, or unknown phenomena. Work requires the origination of new techniques, establishing criteria, or developing new information. Occasionally, extensive analysis and probing are required to determine the nature and scope of problems, with concurrent or sequential activities involving others within or outside the organization.

NATURE AND EXTENT OF SUPERVISION PROVIDED TO THE POSITION

Overall, objectives and resource allocations are determined by the supervisor, providing broad administrative direction, with assignments given in terms of broadly defined missions or functions. Employee plans, designs and carries out programs, projects, studies, or other work independently with minimal supervision. Results are considered technically sound by virtue of the employee’s expertise, and are generally accepted with review only for conformity to objectives, contribution to program goals, or advancement of technological understanding.

General Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Substantial knowledge of immunohematologic principles and basic knowledge of hematology and microbiology.
  • Ability to problem-solve.
  • Ability to operate a computer.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of donor and patient information and test results.
  • Ability to understand and adhere to internal standard operating procedures.
  • Knowledge of required regulations (AABB Standards, State, Federal, etc.).
  • Knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) and Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA).
  • Ability to effectively communicate.
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision in highly stressful situations.
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks efficiently and with high degree of accuracy.
  • Ability to work flexible hours/days.

EDUCATION

Bachelor of Science Degree (BS) in Clinical Laboratory Science or related field (e.g., Medical Technology) required.

Experience

At least one year of experience in antibody identification and transfusion service procedures is preferred.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, ETC.

Current California Clinical Laboratory Scientist License.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Laboratory and Medical environments with high risks.
