POSITION SUMMARY: The Custodian is responsible for providing high-quality, exceptional maintenance within their assigned UAU worksite. On a daily basis, the Custodian ensures all areas are sanitized and maintained to provide a clean, safe environment for participants and staff. Additionally, the Custodian is responsible for ensuring the worksite follows all required safety, health, and operational protocols while complying with applicable standards and regulations.
PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES (include but are not limited to):
- General cleaning and janitorial duties in the common areas including but not limited to; offices, bathroom, kitchen, gymnasium, classrooms and common areas.
- Clean building floors by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing and/or vacuuming.
- Strip and wax floors as needed and directed.
- Perform and document routine inspection and maintenance activities.
- Carry out heavy cleansing tasks and special projects as directed.
- Daily collection and removal of garbage.
- Every day regularly servicing, cleaning and restocking restrooms, kitchens and breakrooms.
- Follow safety procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power equipment to prevent damage to floors and fixtures
- Notify coordinating management when major repairs or maintenance of building operating systems is needed.
- Request and coordinate ordering of supplies and equipment needed for cleaning and maintenance duties.
- Maintains a neat, organized and orderly janitors’ room/ area; ensuring cleaning and maintenance supplies are stocked.
- Washing windows and other hard surfaces that require sanitizing on a regular basis.
- Properly and successfully abide by OSHA, NY State Workers Comp, NYC Department of Health and UAU Safety Program policies and regulations.
- Performs other related duties as necessary or assigned.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
- Required Education: Highschool diploma or equivalent
- Required - 18 years or older at time of hire
- Knowledge of safety hazards and proper use of various cleaning and sanitizing solutions.
- Preferred – Minimum 1 year of janitorial experience working in a childcare, school setting or community center workplace setting.
- Preferred – OSHA certified
- Must pass reference and background checks
- Ability to perform basic repairs and operate tools or equipment used in routine maintenance.
- Ability to keep assigned UAU worksite facility clean and orderly.
- Ability to interact with staff, participants, parents, and visitors at school while remaining professional, polite, and courteous.
- Detail-oriented and thorough while conducting and completing work independently.
- Willing to take initiative and be flexible when needed.

- Incumbent will be scheduled based on operational need.
- Working both indoors and outdoors (based on appropriate and safe weather conditions).
- Involves sitting approximately 10% of the day, walking and standing the remainder.
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position for at least 10% of the time.
- Includes working prolonged periods of time standing and walking, about 95% of the day.
- Must be able to lift, bend, stoop, climb, reach, and lift up to 50 pounds at a time.
- The ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
- The ability to observe details at close range (within a few feet or more of the observer).
