JOB DESCRIPTION:
Under general supervision, performs work maintaining constant readiness and preparedness for all emergency situations which may occur in the City of Pinellas Park Fire Service Area including building and auto fires, floods, hurricanes, hazardous materials spills, and other unforeseen emergencies.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
- Requires high school diploma or GED.
- Ability to pass physical abilities tests.
- Certification as a Florida FF II, EMT, and eligible for certification as a Pinellas County EMT.
- Paramedics must also be certified in ACLS, ITLS or PHTLS, CPR, be certified by the State of Florida, and be eligible for certification by Pinellas County as a paramedic.
- Requires a valid Florida driver license.
- Work involves significant exertion during fire fighting episodes with the potential requirement to move objects weighing up to and exceeding 150 pounds.
- Performance of assigned duties under emergency conditions may involve extreme danger and exertion under hazardous conditions such as smoke, flames, and cramped conditions or surroundings.
- Must be able to wear a respirator as prescribed by NFPA 1500 standards and meet the physical requirements of NFPA 1582.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
- As a member of an emergency response team, stands by to respond to any and all emergencies during a 24-hour shift.
- Conducts fire inspections and pre-planning for buildings & areas within the fire district.
- Responds and mitigates emergency incidents such as structure fires, car fires, gas leaks, auto accidents, medical emergencies, hazmat incidents, floods, and technical rescues.
- Maintains self-contained breathing apparatus, fire hoses, power tools, nozzles and miscellaneous hand tools and small equipment for fighting fires or other emergencies; documents properly all actions that are taken during the 24 hour tour of duty; attends training sessions to upgrade and/or maintain skills necessary for efficient performance of duties; maintains physical fitness to ensure proper capabilities to carry out assigned duties.
- Performs pre-hospital emergency medical services, including treatment of the injured or ill by the application of Basic (EMT), or Advanced (Paramedic) Life Support Activities.
- Assesses the nature of illnesses or injuries and determines appropriate medical treatment.
- Participates in emergency medical service quality assurance activities.
