Education

Qualifications

Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, or related field preferred.

Licensure/Certification/Registry

HT (ASCP) or HTL (ASCP) certification required.

Experience

One year of experience preferred.

  • Good verbal communication and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

  • Log specimens on computer system/copath, retrieve surgical numbers, and charge for procedures performed.
  • Assist pathologists with surgical specimens and other related duties.
  • Process surgical, autopsy and research material.
  • Program and operate automated tissue processors and evaluate problems.

  • Histology Microtomy including; embedding specimens in paraffin and sectioning specimens using manual and automated microtomes.
  • Operate and perform duties associated with departmental instrumentation such as: automated stainer and coverslipper.
  • Prepare and complete special stains and IHC stains required by pathologists.
  • Assist pathologists with preparation of frozen sections including operating cryostats.
  • File and retrieve specimens, slides and paraffin blocks.
  • Rotate on-call duties as required.
  • Assist with the instruction of new employees.
  • Assist and prepare for laboratory inspections.
  • Provide general maintenance and cleanliness of equipment.
  • Order supplies for the department.
  • Perform special laboratory methods such as: neuropathology techniques, immunohistochemical techniques, muscle biopsies, renal biopsies, lymphoma workups, decal procedures, bone marrow processing/AZF and microwave techniques.
  • Identify and define terminology, principles, reactions and results of special laboratory procedures.
  • Interpret reactions, results and protocols to assess validity and check for common or unusual problems.
  • Make recommendations to improve procedures in regard to efficiency and safety.
  • Identify normal tissues grossly and microscopically.
  • Prepare sections for immunofluorescent studies and assist other departments with histotechnologic expertise as required.
  • Perform other tasks as determined by the director, administrative staff, supervisor, or other personnel in order to maintain primary departmental functions.
  • Promote guest relations at all times.
  • Ensure that professional and personal activities conform to Memorial Medical Center’s strategic plan, Behavioral Standards, and Great Patient Experience Program.
  • Performs other related work as required or requested.
