Brief Description

The overall responsibility of the Maintenance Instrument and Control Technician is to maintain and calibrate various types of electrical, DCS, PLC and pneumatic control systems used in the production of electric and steam power. Ormond Beach power station is an operating power station of at least 1612-megawatts (MW).

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Learn and practice safe methods and procedures for personal protection, protection of fellow workers and protections of the public per OSHA regulations
  • Install, calibrate, test, troubleshoot and maintain protective relays, computers, metering, monitoring and control systems on boilers, steam & gas turbines, generators and plant auxiliary equipment. In shop location, this includes performing bench work and component troubleshooting
  • Use testing equipment (oscilloscopes, multi-meters electronic bridges, loop calibrators) and hand tools (i.e. drills, screwdrivers) necessary to troubleshoot and maintain devices and systems for the power plant
  • Repair and calibrate continuous emissions monitoring system (CEMS) equipment and maintain test gas documentation
  • Perform general maintenance activities and procedures on control systems used in power generation
  • Apply knowledge of the operation of a modern electric generating station, including gas turbine operation and Heat Recovery Steam Generation (HRSG) units
  • Apply knowledge of Federal, State, and Company environmental guidelines
  • Tag Out/Lock Out equipment per the companies Tag Out/Lock Out procedure
  • Communicate condition of equipment and status of jobs to crew leader, supervisor, operator, and other craft personnel and outside service representatives
  • Interpret instruction manuals, blueprints, P&ID’s, CWD’s, and control system drawings to locate, identify, troubleshoot, and repair plant systems, electrical interlocks, etc.
  • Complete all written and electronic records (i.e. work orders, calibration sheets, time cards, material requests using computer systems) required to document the work in progress as well as completed work
  • Continually update knowledge of plant systems and instrumentation
  • Make decisions about how best to repair equipment and what resources (tools, time, equipment) are needed
  • Assist in providing skill enhancement training to other personnel
  • Work with and assist company employees as well as contractors within various crafts and skill sets


Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Two (2) years of formal training in electronics, instrumentation, engineering or a related technical discipline preferred
  • Four (4) years industrial experience in electronics repair/calibration preferred, or two (2) years military experience in electronics repair/calibration preferred
  • Demonstrate basic mechanical ability
  • Ability to use a personal computer and associated software
  • Understanding of mechanical & electrical control equipment and basic power plant equipment operation
  • Ability to operate Company vehicles and equipment and maintain operating licenses and certifications (including a valid State Drivers License)
  • Knowledge of electricity, voltage and current relationships
  • Use of hand and power tools and equipment
  • Perform routine cleaning of work area


Physical Requirements

Ability To

  • Climb steel structures, work from aerial devices, work on ladders, catwalks and supports at heights of up to150 feet using aerial man-lifts
  • Work with hand tools (up to 10 pounds) in position above and below head, and extended from body
  • Lift and pull approximately 50 lbs. in standing, bending, and squatting positions
  • Perform work in each of several positions including lying on back, kneeling and crawling, twisting and squatting, and reaching over head
  • Discern colors


Working Conditions

  • Normal office environment and/or out-of-doors work environment
  • Work in and around rotating equipment, high voltage electrical equipment, high noise areas and elevations up to 150 feet
  • Work in all temperatures and climate conditions. Some temperatures can be extreme
  • Work in confined spaces, some requiring the use of respirator protective equipment
  • Performance of duties requires response to calls 24 hours/day, seven days/week and working irregular shifts
  • Work with and around various materials and chemicals (i.e. asbestos, silica, fiberglass, ammonia, hydrazine, lead, chlorine, PVC, Acetone, PCB’s, mercury), oil, grease, and various solvents
  • Wear half- and full-face respirators while wearing various other protective devices (Established facial hair in the sealing area of a respirator is not permitted at any time)
  • Wear personal protective safety equipment (safety glasses, hard hat, appropriate footwear, ear plugs, etc.) as required
  • Contact lenses are not permitted except for specific medical reasons
  • Work may require cross training and travel to other facilities
