Duties / Responsibilities
- Performs in-process quality assessments during vessel construction, including compliance audits prior to external surveys, utilizing Visual Testing (VT), Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), or other non- destructive testing (NDT) inspection methods.
- Consults with Class Surveyors and / or Customer Representatives during external inspections as necessary.
- Provides guidance to production employees and Supervision for workmanship corrections required.
- Shall document, accept or reject workmanship based upon contract acceptance criteria for surface and subsurface inspections.
- Provides mentoring and on-the-job-training (OJT) for NDT certification of other Inspectors.
- Implements and maintains vessel-specific inspection plans and requirements per applicable contract requirements, or as assigned.
- May be assigned auditing of the Quality Management System in accordance with ISO 9001:2015.
- May stand in as Step-Up-Supervisor as needed.
- May be required to support domestic travel to support company need.
- Must be willing to work any shift.

- High school diploma/GED required.
- Required minimum of one (1) years of experience as a Quality Inspector I at Austal USA for internal candidates.
- Three (3) years total NDT Level II experience with a minimum of one (1) year of experience in VT, PT and MT in a related field or three (3) years as a VT Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) for external candidates.
- Level II certification in Visual Testing (VT), Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) methods required.
- Other NDT experience is a plus and will be considered equivalent for preferred applicants.
- Working knowledge of NDT standards including, but not limited to ASNT SNT- TC-1A, MIL-STD-271, MIL-STD-1689, MIL-STD-2035, MIL-STD-22D, MIL-STD-278, MIL-STD-248, ABS-NVR Part 8 and /or corresponding AWS, ANSI, ASTM documents a plus.
- Willingness and ability to learn any new NDT methods and/or skills assigned by management.
- All company provided training shall be based on company needs at the company’s discretion.
- Willingness and ability to increase understanding of the applicable standards and requirements for the job.
- Leadership abilities with an excellent team-spirited attitude.
- Demonstrated ability to read and comprehend construction drawings, schematics and technical manuals.
- Proven ability to perform simple math (add, subtract, multiply and divide) and measure using the metric system.
- Basic knowledge of Trigonometry and Geometry functions are a plus.
- Basic knowledge of shipyard practices and operational principles of the shipbuilding process.
- Strong understanding of quality principles required.
- Work autonomously with minimal direction or management support.
- Ability and willingness to work irregular or extended work schedule as required.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, work under pressure and be self- motivated.
- Basic computer skills utilizing Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Access a plus.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Selected candidates must provide documentation to support certifications / experience prior to interview and / or hire. May be waived at hiring Manager’s discretion based on testing and interviewing scores and company needs.
- Selected candidates shall complete written and practical exams prior to interview and / or hire.
- Selected candidates must score 80% or better on written exam and demonstrate advanced competence in practical demonstrations to be considered for hire.
Additional Guidelines
Candidates must meet the following employment eligibility guidelines to be considered for employment with Austal USA:

- No felony convictions of Theft/Deception or Violent crimes within seven years from disposition date
- No felony convictions of Drug crimes within three years from disposition date

- High School Diploma/GED or comparable trade experience with comparable trade experience defined as five (5) or more years of experience working in the applicable trade, two (2) years of experience in shipbuilding, or, education in the trade comparable to apprenticeship.

- Lift/push/pull 50lbs to 75lbs on an occasional basis.
- Lift/push/pull up to 20lbs on a frequent basis.
- Must have the ability to climb in a safe manner (climbing as a minimum includes stairs, scaffolding, ladders, and ramps).
- Ability to work at heights above 12’ while working from ladders, scaffolding and/or man lifts.
- Able to work at a variety of levels (ex. waist, eye, overhead).
- Demonstrate the ability to safely and appropriately use required tools and equipment.
- Demonstrate good balance while working on uneven surfaces and maneuvering obstacles.
- Possess sufficient handgrip and coordination to carry and operate tools and equipment.
- Ability to utilize personal protective equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, steel- toes shoes, goggles, respirator, safety harness, safety line, flotation gear, etc.) safely per OSHA standards.
- Ability to withstand cold and hot temperatures.
- Ability to enter 18” x 36” openings and work in confined spaces for prolonged periods of time.
- Able to respond to verbal and audible sounds/commands.
- Able to utilize adequate visual skills.
- Ability to fully extend the arm while reaching overhead, reaching out, reaching to the side and reaching down.
- Ability to perceive attributes of an object/material such as size, shape, temperature and texture by means of receptors in the hands and fingers.
