Responsibilities
The Sustainability Specialist promotes, develops, and implements sustainability and energy projects, internal and external, to the City of Dayton. The position requires considerable technical understanding, tact, discretion, and ability to educate. The position works closely with other City Departments, residents, community organizations, and businesses to advocate and guide energy and sustainability initiatives. The Sustainability Specialist is responsible for evaluating energy metrics and generate savings for City facilities and residents. The Sustainability Specialist also works to help with City-wide electric fleet goals and assists the Sustainability Manager in other community-led energy projects. The Sustainability Specialist has the following specific responsibilities:
Bachelor's degree in Climate Science, Sustainability, Earth Science, Ecology, Biology, Energy-Efficiency, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Natural Science, Public Administration, or Urban Planning AND three (3) years of experience in state and national grant applications, environmental education presentation and programming, community engagement speaking, with technical and programmatic research analysis expertise.
A Master's or Law degree in at least one of the previous mentioned fields is preferred with a minimum of two (2) years of related experience.
Degree must be from a college or university that is accredited by the U.S. Department of Education through the North Central Association of Colleges and Universities or equivalent region.
License Requirements
Must possess a valid driver’s license at time of appointment and maintain thereafter as a term and condition of continued employment.

A background investigation and evidence of Employment Authorization and Identity is required prior to employment. All candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position, including current city employees seeking transfer, promotion, demotion, etc. into a classified position.

Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a job-related medical examination including drug screen. Applicants offered employment with the City will be required to pass a nicotine screening. Newly hired employees must remain tobacco and nicotine free as a condition of continued employment. The Tobacco and Nicotine Free Hiring Policy does not apply to current City employees.

- Assist with the implementation of a decarbonization strategy for the City of Dayton with a goal to reach carbon neutrality by 2050.
- Research energy grants and innovative best practices for the implementation of the decarbonization plan
- Conduct utility billing analysis of all City of Dayton energy accounts.
- Conduct energy efficiency assessments for City facilities.
- Orchestrate PLC Day and demand response with all City departments.
- Monitor electric markets and assist with energy procurement.
- Assists with managing the City's aggregation program and answering questions from residents.
- Update the City's greenhouse gas inventory every year.
- Recommend energy benchmarks to the Sustainability Manager related to energy efficiency across City facilities. Analyze the energy budget across all Departments and make recommendations to the Sustainability Manager
- Work with residents on education and engagement around their energy bills and how to lower their energy usage.
- Assist with community energy projects at the discretion of the Sustainability Manager
- Support the Sustainability Manager in PUCO case research regarding electricity and natural gas.
- Assist with the rollout of electric vehicles and charging infrastructure for the city’s fleet.
- Work with the Sustainability Manager to participate in regional and national networks who focus on distribution and transmission related issues.
- Oversee the Sustainability Office's energy intern.
- Analyze City facilities for solar energy potential.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
