The University of Michigan School of Information seeks to hire a postdoctoral scholar to conduct research in the area of data reuse and the impact of curation on reuse activities.

This scholar will work with Dr. Elizabeth Yakel at the University of Michigan School of Information on two research projects involving data sharing and reuse. The first project, Measuring Impact through Curatorial Actions, is in conjunction with the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR), examines the multidimensional concept of impact and how curatorial actions affect data reuse. The second project, Understanding Opportunities and Challenges: Leveraging Academic Expertise for Rapid Response Data Science, examines data sharing between government entities and academia in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. In this project the candidate would be part of a multidisciplinary team of data and information scientists and policy makers from around the US. Specifically, this project investigates the factors that impeded rapid response data science collaboration between governmental entities and university-based researchers in the COVID-19 pandemic. Key work elements in both projects include: conducting and analyzing qualitative interview data, writing academic and white papers, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams on research projects.

Required Qualifications*

  • A PhD in Information, Library, or Archival Science or a related discipline.

  • Qualitative research skills, including interviewing, preparing data for analysis, qualitative data analysis, and the identification of cross-cutting themes;

Desired Qualifications*

  • Experience working alongside, partnering with, and building strong connections with research team members;

  • Experience conducting independent and collaborative research, working with different stakeholders across research and practice settings;

  • Experience using NVivo qualitative analysis software;

  • Experience writing and presenting research in professional settings, such as conferences and academic journals;

  • Administrative skills like scheduling, prompt email communications with all partners, routine check-ins, keeping team members and partners up to date on progress, monitoring and shifting project priorities as needed.

Work Schedule:

Punctual, regular, and consistent attendance is required. May require working during non-business hours and on weekends.

Work Locations:

Will require travel to multiple locations on & off campus. Will occasionally require domestic travel. This position will be based on campus in Ann Arbor, Michigan and have a shared space in our North Quad building on central campus.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

The candidate may be responsible for supervising doctoral, masters, and undergraduate students in various research activities.

Physical Demands/Work Environment:

  • Candidate must regularly move throughout the office environment

  • Candidate must remain stationary for prolonged periods of time throughout the workday

  • Candidate may occasionally move equipment or supplies weighing up to 20 pounds

  • Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer
