Michigan Sugar Company has an immediate full-time opportunity for a Technical Services Manager, located at the Corporate Office, Bay City, MI 48708.




Job Summary:


The Technical Services Manager manages the day-to-day operations of the Quality Assurance Operations . This position provides technical support and direction to the Factory Chemists, Quality Assurance Manager and SQF Manager roles via dotted line supervision and support. They provide support to the Vice President of Operations, as well as the entire Operations department with respect to quality analysis, process optimization, technical training, and support to efficiently operate the four beet sugar factories within Michigan Sugar. This support ranges from laboratory instrument and methods development to a deep understanding of the daily and weekly production reporting for the company. The role manages chemical control of factory operations and quality control functions for all products, works collaboratively with the factory resources, is responsible for the accurate and timely reporting of analytical data pertaining to factory operation and quality control of finished products, and accounting for sugar introduced and leaving the process



Primary Responsibilities:


  • Communicate with and assist the Factory Lab management team in solving or investigating process problems which require technical, analytical or laboratory services.

  • Assist in the training and development of laboratory employees.

  • Advise and assist in areas relative to sample collection and analysis, laboratory equipment and analytical procedures.

  • Working with the SQF Manager and Quality Assurance Manager to help remedy any food safety or quality problems along with facility managers.

  • Ensures the calibration of testing instruments, weights, and proper adjustment and use of laboratory instruments.

  • Oversee the preparation and completion of the DMR-QA (Discharge Monitoring Report-Quality Assurance) study as required by the site specific NPDES permit. Review the results prior to submittal and assist the factory chemist in identifying, correcting, submitting the corrective actions for any nonconforming results.

  • Supervise activities of General Laboratory. Assign projects to General Laboratory when special testing is required.

  • Establish quality control procedures for all products, keep the Vice President of Operations advised of evaluations. Where necessary, make recommendations for quality improvements. Keep Marketing Department advised of all aspects of product quality.

  • Assists in maintaining optimum in-process and product quality control to ensure that customer specifications are being maintained.

  • Along with the Quality Assurance Manager and SQF Manager, responsible for the establishment and adherence to rules of good housekeeping in all areas and facilities under his/her direction; monitors the effectiveness of housekeeping practices to see that the highest standards are maintained.

  • Communicates orally and in writing. Read and understand oral and written policies, safety and environmental requirements, and other company policies.

  • Some travel required to meetings, conferences, and company locations.

  • Keep the Vice President of Operations and Factory Superintendents advised of evaluations concerning chemical control, crystallization, losses, and other factors pertinent to factory operations and make recommendations for improvements.

  • Keep abreast of all FDA and State Agency regulations relative to our products. Consult with Company Legal Counsel in these matters and make recommendations to all.

  • Maintain cost control in all areas of his responsibility.

  • Responsible for the safety of employees under his supervision and for the safe operation of all machinery and equipment used by those employees in the course of their employment, including the maximum effective use of all safety devices and equipment.

  • Prepare operating, maintenance and repair, and capital budgets for factory laboratories and general laboratory.

  • Coordinate and ensure all factory laboratory equipment is calibrated on an acceptable cycle.

  • Provide support for ‘round-robin’ testing of quality parameters to ensure that consistent analysis is occurring between sites.




Secondary Responsibilities:


  • Keep abreast of current analytical and quality technology to ensure Company has the best applicable methodology at its disposal.

  • Makes every effort to keep up with advances and new techniques, which will improve the function of the Quality Department.

  • Establishes and maintains lines of communication, coordination, cooperation, and an informal working relationship between other departments of the Company that will ensure that plans, programs, and their progress are in harmony with and contribute to the Company’s overall objectives.

  • Performs other related duties as required by the Executive staff.

  • Coordinates with the Operating and Marketing Departments in matters relating to sugar orders and shipments.

  • Works closely with the Sales Department regarding customer satisfaction and product and by-product quality.

  • Provide technical assistance, review KPI monitoring systems & determine to improve process operations.




Position Qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry or related field, including Engineering

  • Minimum 5 years experience

  • Strong knowledge of and experience with laboratory analysis and instrumentation

  • Strong interpersonal skills including demonstrated written and oral communication skills

  • Working knowledge of the sugar production process and the quality parameters required




Key Competencies:


  • Extensive knowledge of laboratory instrumentation and methods applied in the sugar factory, lab and finished product areas

  • Extensive knowledge of Quality Control and Industrial Hygiene Practices

  • Extensive knowledge of GMP and food safety practices

  • Skilled in the use of all related quality testing equipment

  • Skilled in the use of a computer and related technology

  • Ability to read and understand instructions

  • Ability to read, teach and interpret safety information & placards

  • Valid driver’s license required to apply and required to maintain employment in this position
