Description


The City of Norfolk's Slover Library invites applications for a part-time Library Assistant II position on its Collection Processing Team.

This position helps ensure Slover Library serves as a vital and dynamic “lighthouse” of community lifelong learning, civic engagement, and leading-edge technology available to all citizens of the region. Success in this position draws on the incumbent’s competencies in advocating an inclusive and diverse library environment, nurturing safe and accessible library spaces, and embracing innovative processes and technologies that enhance library operations.

This position serves in the Library Collections division and reports to the Circulation Supervisor at Slover Library. Primary responsibilities of this position include ensuring Slover Library’s materials are organized and easy to obtain by both the public and the staff.

Slover Library is in beautiful downtown Norfolk on the corner of Plume and Atlantic Street near MacArthur Square and the MacArthur Memorial.




Departmental Hiring Salary Range: $18.12 hourly





Essential Functions


Essential functions include but are not limited to:




  • Assists with daily collection processing tasks including Send List, Hold Shelf List, items in transit list, and related lists.

  • Processes items from the Morning Bins (dating books with the creation date, marking, and stamping items); sorts items onto carts; enters corrections in Workflows, as needed; prepares outgoing bins for transportation.

  • Performs collection management tasks such assisting with weeding and shifting projects, changing status or location of books, assessing and reporting on condition of books, suggesting book purchases based on missing titles or damaged materials, reporting book errors, and performing shelf checks and retrieving items and book lists, and other tasks, as directed.

  • Communicates with patrons, Collection Librarian, and Circulation Supervisor when materials are missing and will or will not be purchased.



Other Functions:




  • Participates in desk shifts, as assigned.

  • Performs other duties, as assigned.







Education/Experience


Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with six months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency. Junior college, vocational, business, technical or correspondence schools are likely sources. Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training.

One year of experience in library or related customer service work.

Additional Preferred Experience:




  • One year of experience working in a library collection processing workroom or equivalent environment including handling the Send List, Hold Shelf List, transit list, missing items lists, and weeding projects.

  • Intermediate proficiency using SirsiDynix Symphony Workflows and/or similar integrated library systems (ILS) such as for entering and correcting item information.

  • Intermediate proficiency using Microsoft Excel such as to log and track book statistics and weeding projects.





Additional Information & Requirements


This position is 20 hours per week. Workdays and hours will vary depending on organizational needs. Staff typically work schedules anytime within the hours of 8:30 am – 5:00 pm Monday – Saturday.

This position will require flexibility to work some rotating weekends and evening schedules.
