Job Summary



The Student Assistant supports the Department of Computer Science by providing academic tutoring services that guide and assist Computer Science undergraduate students with homework, problem solving, and test preparation on the Armstrong campus beginning in the Fall of 2021.


Student employees cannot work more than 1300 hours in a 12-consecutive month period.

Responsibilities


  • Tutors Computer Science undergraduate students individually or in scheduled group study sessions to review principles, solve problems, and review for tests for their programming based courses

  • Administers testing instruments and writes individual tutoring plans upon review of textbooks

  • Refers students to other agencies as appropriate

  • Leads and trains entry level tutors in strategies to accommodate alternative learning styles and disabilities

  • Maintains and updates confidential files and records, ensuring compliance with ethical and legal guidelines

  • Researches and selects learning materials, textbooks, software and equipment to facilitate tutoring

  • May design specific handout, study, and related materials


Shift Specifics:


  • Up to 20 hours per week

  • Flexible with schedule of availability

Required Qualifications



Educational Requirements


  • Must be enrolled in six or more undergraduate credit hours or three or more graduate credit hours at Georgia Southern University.

  • Successfull completion of CSCI 1301, CSCI 1302, CSCI 3230 or equivalent with a grade of B or higher

Preferred Qualifications



Preferred Education


  • Pursuing a degree in Computer Science

  • Completed course CSCI 3432 (DataBase Systems) or equivalent


Preferred Experience


  • Familiar with Javascript and have worked with SQL (Structured Query Language) in the past

  • Knowledge of tutorial/learning materials and instructional aids

  • Experience preparing instructional aids and plans

Proposed Salary



$10.00 per hour
