We are currently accepting applications a Water Maintenance Worker. This position performs a wide variety of water maintenance-related tasks, primarily in a training capacity. Tasks include the repair and maintenance of equipment, facilities, utility lines, etc. Work is often strenuous and repetitive and is performed on the basis of clear instruction or direct supervision.



The Water Maintenance Worker job classification is an entry level position. Upon successful completion of a training matrix, employees in the Maintenance Worker classification will advance to the Skilled Worker classification: Salary Range: $4,943.38 - $6,212.474/month; $28.52 - $35.84 per hour plus benefits.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Under direct supervision, performs general duties necessary to the repair, installation and maintenance of the water infrastructure and facilities, and maintains and services the lines. Work is often strenuous and repetitive.

  • Use backhoes, hydro excavators, combination jet/vacs, dump trucks, truck and trailer combinations, air hammers, forklifts and trench shoring equipment.

  • Performs maintenance to utility equipment and defective meters and meter boxes.

  • Routinely performs inspection, preventive maintenance and repairs on key operating components of the City's utility infrastructure such as valves, pipelines, hydrants, valves, blow-off assemblies, and air/vacuum release valves.

  • Conducts traffic control / flagging in the city's rights-of-way.

  • Responds to emergency calls after regular business hours (overtime): customer requests, main and service breaks, and water turn off/on requests.


Qualifications

  • Basic mechanic skills/knowledge.

  • Knowledge/experience in construction.

  • Excellent customer service experience with the general public.

  • Basic computer and keyboard skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively on teams.

  • General knowledge and ability to interpret maps, drawings, and records.

  • Demonstrated ability to adhere to safety procedures, work rules and guidelines.

  • Possess excellent verbal, listening and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Must be able and willing to work overtime (including nights and weekends).

  • Required to respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis.

  • Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's license by date of hire. Must have and maintain a good driving record by City Standards.

  • Must be able to obtain a Washington State Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a tanker endorsement within one year of employment.

  • Selected candidate must pass a pre-employment flexibility test and physical capacity test.

  • Selected candidate must pass a pre-employment drug test.

  • Prior to obtaining CDL, selected candidate must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test(consistent with Federal Laws requiring drug and alcohol testing for all job classifications requiring a CDL).

  • In-house applicants who do not currently possess a CDL will be subject to the pre-employment drug and alcohol test in accordance with DOT rules and regulations.

Working Conditions & Physical Demands

  • Must be able to lift up to 90 lbs. and engage in considerable pulling, pushing and climbing.

  • Work is done mostly outdoors in all types of weather conditions. Common hazards include traffic, underground lines, chemicals and equipment.

  • Individuals must have adequate hearing and visual acuity to successfully perform the essential job functions and requirements of the position.

  • Individuals must be able to hear, speak and understand verbal communication and other outside sound sources. Vision abilities include close, distance, color, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

  • This is a union position.

  • Required to respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis.
