The Accountant II contributes to the timely delivery and reporting of accurate financial information. This individual will be a primary contributor to the month-end close, have responsibilities pertaining to more complex areas of the general ledger and optimization of business processes. Finally the Accountant II will have ownership over various business process projects designed to implement best practices throughout the accounting organization.



Essential Duties and Responsibilities


  • Prepare journal entries

  • Provide account analysis and prepare month-end balance sheet reconciliations for designated accounts which may include more complex / higher judgement accounts

  • Cross-train with other members of the accounting team to ensure adequate back-ups for all tasks

  • Ability to work with large data sets (e.g. Utilities/Advertising/Payroll/etc. data for 1,200+ stores along with Corporate and DC locations)

  • Monitor activities within designated p/l and b/s accounts to ensure accuracy and proper classification of expenses

  • Follow-up on inquiries made pertaining to the general ledger from both the accounting and finance organization

  • Prepare necessary schedules for the year-end financial statement audit

  • Provide high quality deliverables while meeting tight deadlines

  • Actively participate in the various system implementations that are taking place throughout the organization

  • Understand and document business and retail processes ensuring appropriate controls and adhere to best practices

  • Ensure compliance with internal controls, following internal procedures and enhancing current processes

  • Actively communicate status and issues to Manager

  • Document accounting policies for related job functions

  • Research issues and follow-up on inquiries from Managers and other departments as needed

  • Assist other accountants and provide training and mentorship to Accountant I(s) as needed

  • Manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines with high-quality deliverables

  • Additional duties as assigned

  • Regular attendance is a required essential function of the position

Requirements


Qualifications – Education and Experience


  • Bachelor's Degree required, a major in accounting or finance is strongly desired

  • CPA preferred or in progress

  • 2-4 years of related experience required

  • 1-3 years of experience in general ledger accounting and financial reporting

  • Highly motivated individual willing to take ownership of job responsibilities and see tasks through to a timely completion

  • Highly organized, ability to manage multiple tasks at once, while keeping accurate records and maintaining a high level of productivity

  • Knowledge of Oracle financial systems is desirable

  • Strong knowledge of US GAAP, accounting principles, internal controls, month-end closing procedures, and financial reporting

  • Requires minimum supervision on day-to-day activities

  • Has a natural curiosity to research variances and other anomalies

  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills

  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills

  • Integrity and ethics that are beyond reproach

  • Person must be diligent and self-motivated with attention to detail

  • Very proficient with Excel spreadsheets

  • Tableau, Microsoft Access, IBM TM1 experience is a plus, but not required

Physical Demands – Environment and Work Conditions


General office environment requiring ability to:

  • Stand, walk, sit for extended periods of time

  • Speak and listen to others in person and over the phone

  • Use keyboard and read from computer screen and reports

  • Lift up to 15 lbs.
