Under the Chief Credit Officer, the VP Commercial Lending is responsible for overseeing, planning, directing and executing all aspects of the Commercial Lending. This includes the origination, underwriting, processing, funding and servicing of Small Business loans. This position is a key leadership role responsible for the success of the Commercial Lending Strategy for the Credit Union and ensures an effective structure for centralized credit review and credit approval within the Credit Union is maintained. This role is responsible for driving growth and profitability of all Commercial Lending and Small Business programs and product lines through commercial/business relationships, loan volume, business deposit accounts, operational efficiencies and new market opportunities (e.g., loan participations and exploration of lending programs to support distressed and underserved communities). This position is responsible for managing adherence to established policies, guidelines, procedures and goals for the Commercial Lending Department. Reviews and monitors underwriting loan policy results to ensure that overall underwriting standards are being maintained; ensures all loan underwriting decisions are properly documented for compliance reviews; ensures all underwriting processes and procedures are being applied consistently; and continuously monitors the impact of underwriting standards on approvals vs. loan denials. At the same time, this individual will ensure that members receive an exceptional loan servicing experience that is timely and in collaboration with the commercial sales teams within the Credit Union. In addition, this position prepares and manages the department operational budget, develops,
proposes, gains acceptance for, and implements strategic plans designed to meet the Credit Union’s short and long-term Business & Commercial lending objectives. Responsible for executing risk management activities of the Commercial Lending team, to include all required regulatory board reporting. Assumes a proactive role in the development and implementation of products, services, pricing and procedures to promote and achieve Credit Union goals and objectives. Lastly, this position is responsible for hiring and training staff for the department as well as ensuring that all training documentation is updated (compliance, legal etc.). Leads with an expectation of teamwork & collaboration with internal business partners across the organization.

Responsibilities
- Responsible for the creation, refinement and execution of the Commercial Lending Strategy to meet overall business objectives including business line profitability.
- Ensures department tactics are aligned and support overall strategy of business unit
- Responsible for the Commercial Lending department operations (i.e., originating, underwriting, processing, funding, and servicing), sales and production of Commercial lending goals as well as all financial goals for the department.
- Communicates with members, staff and Commercial Loan Brokers to sell/purchase loan products and ensure superior member service. Monitors individual as well as departmental progress toward such goals.
- Oversees operational and risk management activities of the Commercial Lending team to ensure the highest level of member service, accuracy of work, operating efficiencies and compliance with internal policies, procedures and guidelines as well as regulatory and credit requirements/compliance.
- Serves as the Business Lending Committee Chair.
- Responsible for the integrity of all applicable Federal, State, and NCUA rules and regulations compliance requirements and internal or external audit or regulatory scrutiny. This also includes all reporting requirements needed to support this effort.
- Directly analyzes and monitors Commercial Loans and Participation Loans to ensure adherent risks are covered for the Credit Union.
- Communicates findings to CCO.
- Is judicious in following all credit union policies and procedures to ensure satisfactory audit reviews; in conjunction with other lending management, this position helps prepare timely, comprehensive responses to all audit exceptions.
- Monitors and ensures centralized underwriting structure for all regions and markets are effective.
- Responsible for underwriting credit review and credit approval within the Credit Union.
- Reviews and updates loan policy and procedures as appropriate to maintain the commercial loan credit quality.
- Drives operational excellence during the loan process that is in collaboration with the commercial sales teams and effectively maintains the segregation of duties between the loan origination functions and underwriting approval processes; maximizing operational efficiency through every aspect of the lending process.
- Responsible for supervision and oversight of the Commercial Lending team.
- Leads with an expectation of teamwork & collaboration with internal business partners across the organization. Provides leadership and coaching to motivate and maximize individual and team performance.
- Responsible for recruitment, professional development, performance management, employee relations and disciplinary actions of the team.
- Monitors and develops reporting mechanisms to qualitatively assess team member performance and production volumes.
- Submits reports to executive management pertaining to observations and conclusions relating to performance and production goals.
- Drive operational excellence (regulatory compliance, credit risk management, underwriting workflow measurements, efforts to improve and create greater efficiencies, etc.)
- Directs, establishes, maintains and plans overall policies and procedures for the Commercial Lending department.
- Maintains expert level knowledge related to Commercial/Business Lending, products/services, practices, regulatory requirements, compliance, trends and competitive offerings. Identifies and recommends potential new markets and business partners and negotiates agreements.
- Focuses on core deliverables such as increasing brand awareness, bringing in new business members, data analysis and driving new revenues by effectively challenging and motivating team members and a variety of other lending services duties.
- Performs duties that support all business/commercial, direct and indirect lending programs, services and delivery methods.
- Measure/track performance against benchmarks –collaborating with Senior Management, CCO and Business Loan Committee as needed to continuously improve the credit quality of the commercial loan portfolio.
- Responsible for developing annual budget for the department, and monthly monitoring for variances.
- Monitor and take actions to ensure overall expenses are within established budget and guidelines.
- Assist members with loan requests, problem resolution and cross sells products and services.
- Supports and participates in continuous improvement activities.
- Provide product expertise or solutions on various cross-functional and cross-business initiatives to support branch operations & sales, technology infrastructure, operations, finance, legal/ compliance.
- Maintains high standards of product, service and process quality.
- Manages the business with attention to detail and data integrity.
- Manages production and projects to agreed upon timelines.
- Represents the Credit Union in a positive and professional manner.
- Other related duties as assigned.

- Treats all team members and members with respect.
- A minimum o f ten years combined related experience in Commercial and Business Lending/Banking with direct credit authority, including 5 years of management experience. High level of Commercial Credit experience. Direct experience in all production, documentation and closing of business lending products and the automated lending platforms needed to drive applications, credit quality and underwriting efficiencies.
- Ability to analyze and evaluate Commercial loan requests and make credit decisions. Expert level knowledge in commercial/business lending and service practices, laws and regulations. Knowledge of how to perform in depth portfolio monitoring for risk and in alignment with regulatory requirements. Knowledge of the budget process
- Knowledge of Construction, Multi-Family, Commercial & Industrial and SBA lending procedures and guidelines. Federal, State and NCUA rules and regulations related to commercial lending and business services.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in order to effectively interact, motivate and influence staff, members and all levels of management. Ability to effectively present ideas and concepts to management, Board of Directors and other key stakeholders
- Strong analytical skills and ability to exercise sound judgment. The ability to analyze loan request and understands and works proficiently with credit scoring and automated approval systems. Ability to forecast and determine realistic and attainable strategic plans to meet business development goals. Ability to plan, organize, prioritize, and delegate.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast paced, high production environment. Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office (in particular, Excel) and business writing skills.

- Master’s degree or advanced degree in business or related field is preferred.
