Position Summary

This position encompasses general police and facility security work, including enforcement of applicable laws, rules, and regulations. It involves crime prevention, investigation, and detection; traffic control; and maintaining law and order. The position also entails public relations responsibility to the interest and needs of the public.

This is a non-exempt position in the Police Department. The Police Officer reports to the Police Sergeant.

Essential Job Functions

  • Enforce applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations, including the Omaha Airport Authority (OAA)’s rules and regulations and the provisions of the Airport Security Program
  • Perform duties outlined in the Police Department Standard Operating Procedures, Airport Emergency Plan, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Certification Manual, and other contingency plans
  • Perform airside operations area escorts, as necessary, once trained, authorized, and badged to drive in the non-movement area
  • Perform various patrol and surveillance functions, both vehicle and by foot, to assess security measures and ensure a high level of security for airport property, facilities, and persons
  • Provide law enforcement support for Transportation Security Administration (TSA) passenger screening functions
  • Responding to requests for police assistance
  • Investigate minor crimes occurring at the airport, provide preliminary response for serious crimes, forward reports for law enforcement follow-up investigations
  • Maintain proper logbooks, reports, and forms; recording circumstances surrounding events and investigations that occur while on duty
  • Maintain traffic flow on airport roadways and issue citations, when appropriate
  • Oversee vehicular traffic security for the parking garage during heightened federal security alerts
  • Appear in court to present evidence and testify, as needed
  • Perform designated Communication Center duties, as assigned
  • Communicate essential information to appropriate parties adhering to established protocols for radio use
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Knowledge of the proper use and care of firearms, maintaining competency in the use of authorized service weapons as well as passing the annual State of Nebraska Firearms Qualifications Course
  • Ability to obtain a non-movement area driver qualification within the probationary/qualification period and maintain the certification throughout employment
  • Valid Nebraska or Iowa driver's license
  • Clear communication, both written and verbally, in English
  • Ability to understand and carry out complex written and oral instructions
  • Situational analysis for adoption of a quick and efficient course of action, including making logical decisions under pressure
  • Capable of learning factual materials and ability to apply knowledge in critical situations
  • Mental alertness and good observation skills
  • Assertiveness in potentially dangerous situations
  • Professional bearing and appearance through neatness and overall grooming
  • Capable of producing desired results while effectively utilizing available resources

  • Ability to pass OAA physical agility, drug screening and background checks

  • Physical requirements require officers to often carry gear such as weapons, protective vests, and communication devices. Ability to carry out a foot pursuit if necessary and subdue or restrain suspects, require upper and lower body strength to apply handcuffs or control individuals. Officers need good dexterity to operate firearms, radios, vehicles, and other tools. Other tasks and duties include applying first aid, writing and submitting reports in a timely manner. This job involves walking, standing, and patrolling for extended periods of time indoors and outdoors in all types of weather.
